Answers to common questions

Any exisiting Craft Freemason is welcome to join the Mark Degree, if you have not joined a Craft Lodge then this is the first step.

This is a broad question, you can join the Mark Degree as soon as you are a craft mason, however whether this is the right time for you to join is up to you. Many members join after they have had some time to get to understand the basics of freemasonry, some wait until they have taken an office in their craft lodge, there is no hard rules for this, it is personal preference.

Of course, like any of the orders in Freemasonry, you are welcome to join as many lodges as you wish. There are specialist interest lodges covering a wide range of hobbies, Golf Lodges,  Motorcycling Lodges, Motorsport Lodges and many more, each allows you to meet members with similar interests and to generate a wide network of friends.

It is often said that the Mark Degree explores further the second degree in Craft Freemasonry, in Scotland a new masons progress would include becoming a “Mark Man” as part of the traditional route to being a Master Mason.

Like any Lodge in any order, this varies. Each lodge has by-laws that state the number of meetings that they hold. The minimum woudl be two meetings a year with one as an installation meeting and then a second normal meeting, others will meet up to 8 times a year, it is rare for a lodge to meet more than this.

The costs for a Mark Lodge can be variable, but are based on their meeting location, some masonic halls have higher charges, there will be the cost of the meal, and like any other these can vary widely based on the location and type of meal that is served. We have Daylight Lodges that have breakfast and more “Fine Dining” Lodges with the inherent costs involved. There are “dues” to be paid to the Province, and Dues to be paid to Mark Grand Lodge, but generally these are lower than that for Craft Lodges.

To join RAM, you need to be a Mark Mason. These two orders are linked by governance, but are seperate in their teachings. The do however both have a very friendly outlook and the ceremonies for both orders are both instructive and fun!

Like everything in Freemasonry, you have a choice. There are of course some people who do not find the side-orders attractive, many don’t even try them, but like any Lodge or Order, you can resign at any time or join a different lodge. Members move house, even move to different countries and then join a lodge in their new location. There is always a connection to your “mother” lodge or the first lodge you join in any order, some stay as full members, some apply for “country” membership. You are always in control.

No. Ther is no requirement to progress within a Lodge, many do, but there are also those who are happy to stay as members on the floor of the lodge.

There is ritual to learn if you want to progress through the offices of the lodge and ultimately to take the Chair of the lodge you join. There is no compulsion for you to learn some of the larger pieces that are available, this is a personal preference. Your membership of the Lodge should be comfortable for you, there are plenty that want to, and enjoy learning and presenting the ritual, if this is not “you” then sit back , relax and enjoy your membership.

Like all Orders in Freemasonry, your family and work commitments come first. If you are unable to attend a meeting, simply send your apologies in good time, you will of course be missed by those attending, but they understand that things happen in life.

Almost as soon as you become a craft freemason, there will always be people encouraging you to join more orders and side degrees. If you do not feel ready, or are not interested, then a firm but polite rebuttable will generally stop them (for now!) , you will know when you want to explore more within the organisation in general and this is the only time that you should take another step.
